Basic Sale Policy:
A 50%
deposit must be made in order to buy any of the horses on the
site, refundable only if the horse dies before shipping or is
severely injured or incapacitated. In the event that a serious
problem (unsoundness, bad disposition, etc) is discovered by the
Prunty Ranch during training, handling, etc, the buyer will have
the option of applying the deposit to a different horse.
Remaining
balance may be paid off in installments before the horse
is shipped, or may be paid off in one “lump sum” at time of
shipping.
No horse will
leave the ranch without being
paid in full,
including any
boarding fees. Horses left past pick-up deadlines will be
boarded for $100/month.
Please make all checks and money
orders payable to Becky Prunty Lisle, unless seller is otherwise
noted as a Guest Consignment.
The Prunty horses are currently sold only
through private treaty sales. To visit the ranch and view the
horses, appointments must be made, preferably two weeks in
advance. Opportunities for viewing are limited, due to
pasturing schedules and our remote location. Thirty miles of
gravel road lead from the ranch to Highway 225, and in the
winter, the gravel road is not maintained, and usually closes
completely during winter months. Because of this:
- Horses are available for casual
viewing between June 1 and October 1. This excludes the
current year's foal crop, which arrives at the ranch in
early June from winter range.
- Horses purchased after June 1 must be
paid in full and shipped from the ranch no later than
October 15. Horses purchased after October 15 will winter
at the ranch, and must be paid in full and shipped from the
ranch no later than June 30.
- We understand that unforeseen
circumstances arise, and exceptions shall be dealt with on
an individual basis, but any horses left past the
deadline dates will be boarded at a cost of $100/month until
they are shipped.
We now offer a number of
high quality AQHA and
APHA registered colts and
started ranch horses for
sale.
Frequently
Asked Questions
How is shipping arranged?
Buyers are completely responsible for arranging shipping. There
is approximately 30 miles of gravel road between the ranch and
Hwy 225, which becomes extremely difficult to travel with
excessive rain, etc. There are three options, described as
follows:
Buyers are welcome to come to the ranch to pick up their
purchased horse, road conditions permitting. Summer and fall
months offer spans of great traveling conditions. Two week
advance notice required.
The Prunty Ranch can haul purchased horses to meet buyers,
either to the Hwy 225/Charleston Road intersection, or to Elko.
Set fee is $1.00 per mile, round trip. (To intersection: $60, To
Elko: $170.) This is recommended especially during rainy or
snowy periods. Buyers with 2-wheel drive vehicles, highway tread
tires, lack of experience navigating gravel roads, etc, may also
want to consider this option. Two week advance notice required.
Buyers can hire a professional horse transport company. If
hauler is not willing or able to drive on gravel roads, a Prunty
Ranch employee can haul the purchased horse to one of the above
mentioned meeting places, for the listed fee. Fee to be added to
the purchase price of horse and must be received in advance. Two
week advance notice required.
Are these horses registered?
All registered horses are listed as such. The grade horses are
listed for sale with a lot number, such as YY2005-10h.
Registered horses will either be listed with their name and
registration number, or if the paperwork is not yet complete, as
"registration pending." Horses with pinto markings are eligible
for registration with the National Pinto Horse Registry.
What about the ranch mares’ breeding?
For approximately 40 years, Pruntys have been utilizing the same
breeding program for their grade horses. The mares are a unique
cross of the original ranch stock and AQHA and APHA bloodlines.
Having been crossed with registered stock for over thirty years,
the ranch mares have continued to improve, and the grade mares
currently in use are the product of three decades of our unique
blend.
See our history section.
The registered mares
have been carefully selected for conformation, suitability of
purpose, disposition, and pedigree. Our goal is to produce
superior-quality foals with renowned bloodlines, and raise them
the way nature intended, resulting in horses ideal for ranch
use, competition, and pleasure.
What are the sires of the horses for sale?
The stallions are all shown on the site for reference. The grade
mares and selected stallions are on winter range from November
to early June. Sires usually keep the same mare band from year
to year, and also mark the foals as their offspring.
What kind of training have the horses had?
When the foals are weaned, they spend the winter at
the ranch and are around people on a daily basis. Ideally, they
are halter trained as weanlings or yearlings. Horses that have
been started or have extra work are listed as such on the site.
How is your program unique?
Undoubtedly the most unique part of our program is the way the
horses are raised, spending most of the year in the “wide open
spaces” with little or no human contact. As a result, the
horses are able to live as nature intended them to live,
developing alertness, stamina, sure feet, ability, and heart
that cannot be found in stall and pasture raised horses.
Are the horse colts sold
as stallions? If not, when are they gelded?
The horse colts are gelded in June or July of their yearling
year, so the only horse colts sold intact are the previous
year's weaned foals that leave the ranch before the herd is
gelded. (A 2005 horse colt that is sold and shipped before June
2006 will not be gelded.)
How big do your horses
usually get?
Over the years, we have continually sought to breed horses
with larger
frames and more bone, since that is what we needed for work on
the ranch. Our traditional breeding stock averages around 15
hands. In the past ten years, we have used some stallions with
less frame size and more compact, athletic ability, crossed with
the ranch mares. While this has resulted in some reduction of
mature size of the offspring, our horses retain our trademark
athleticism and ability.
Have these horses been loaded in a
trailer?
Horses will have been loaded and worked with accordingly as much
as possible before shipping. To ensure the safety of horses and
humans alike, however, we do have chute facilities to load a
horse in a trailer if necessary.
Have these
horses been shod, bathed, and clipped?
Horses sold as started or broke will have shoeing experience
included in their listing. Horses turned out year-round have
naturally hard, solid feet and do not require shoes. As far as
bathing—only when it rains! (Naturally, if the horses have not
been bathed, they have not been clipped either.)
What if more than one
person is interested in a horse? Selling horses via
the internet presents a challenge since several people may
express interest in the same horse at the same time, but do not
have the benefit of live-auction style bidding and
eventual elimination of competing bidders. Because of this, we
operate on a first come, first served basis. While there may be
several people inquiring about any given horse, those who commit
to sending a deposit are given precedence. A horse remains
available until a deposit is received from an interested
party--this method allows us to filter through the "ifs, maybes,
and buts" to find the party most interested in making the
purchase.
Are the horses
sold with a guarantee?
No. Buyers are encouraged to visit the ranch to see their
horses in the flesh and visually inspect them. Any problems not
addressed at that time will not entitle the buyer to any
kind of refund. Veterinary health certificates are required to
ship a horse out of state, and can also be obtained at the
buyer’s request prior to shipping a horse within Nevada. When
a horse leaves the ranch, we are no longer responsible. All
sales are final.
